Fortune Plaza Block, Chongqing - China
[International Competition 2003, 1. Prize

The heart of the project is Fortune Plaza, a public square that relates both to theshopping galleria along Huaxin Road and to the central park. Four 100-meterhigh towers with offices, hotel and service apartment units mark this high-densitylandmark.The central park offers an attractive focus for both the commercial andthe housing blocks. On the northern side a spine of office buildings functions asa noise and pollution buffer towards the motorway. The buildings face the central park, establishing a representative address.Landscaped courtyards with activities that spill from the buildings separate theoffice blocks from each other. The small scale International Business Center in the east establishes a distinctoffice area for foreign companies. The housing neighborhoods use the existingterraced topography to give the open space both a distinctive identity andcontinuity. Lower density housing is oriented to the park with its sports andrecreation facilities. The high-rise housing in the south corresponds to the scaleof the neighboring developments and protects the internal landscape.Specialattention has been given to the preservation of natural resources, energyconservation, cross ventilation and pollution control. Interactive facades andpassive gain support both economics and a sustainable approach.
